Leatherman Fuse Multi Tool - More Equipped Than The Less Pricey Leatherman Kick But Leaner And Lighter Than The Leatherman Blast

All three options show a strong resemblance to one another, and all make use of the same uprated tougher elliptical plier head. (Just like the Leatherman Charge and Leatherman Wave).

The pliers on the Leatherman Fuse are the exact same thickness as my old Leatherman PST, but then the pivot area is the considerably wider and stronger. Having used the Fuse on quite a few odd jobs around my house, I am not convinced that this extra width got in the way at all. With a larger wire cutter area as well, I have no doubt that the revised plier head design is a sure improvement.

If you are more used to the original Leatherman pocket tools, the one thing that jumps out at you about the Leatherman Fuse is its handles. Plastic grips with curved edges have been molded in along the edges, which means the pliers are far more comfortable to hold on to than the former plain steel edges. A series of finger grooves has also been introduced, which will help keep the multi tool from sliding when your hands are wet.

Situated within one handle, the Leatherman Fuse packs a set of scissors, a Phillips screwdriver, and a cap lifter/can opener/wire stripper combo blade. The scissors aren't bad, but they are a step backwards if I am honest. For some reason, Leatherman has built them smaller than the first Wave's scissors, with a noticeably shorter cutting action. I liked the old ones better.

Much improved however, is the Phillips screwdriver. In a different way to those on cheap imported multi tools, it has a really well thought out shape to it. It's also easily long enough to get to recessed screws within the battery compartment cover on my girl's new toys.

The other handle has a clip point knife blade plus two flat head screwdrivers, also a nice length.

Talking of long tools, this knife is the Crocodile Dundee of multi tool blades, with a great deal more reach than that of former multi tools in its class. What a knife!

But in comparison to its cheaper cousin the Kick, the only extra function the Fuse has is its scissors. Which kinda sucks. Why didn't Leatherman leave the unnecessary lanyard ring off the Fuse, and substituted a reasonable diamond file. I often need a file, and prefer not to carry a multi tool without one.

One worthwhile point about the Fuse blades; they all lock. Using the same rocker switch lock that Leatherman Tool Group initially employed on the Crunch, every tool snaps securely into place with an audible click. Ok, I know, I carried an first PST without locking blades for more than ten years. But it's like power steering on lorries; once it became available, it doesn't make any sense to be without it. Locking blades are a necessary thing in my opinion.
