The Way My Cold Calling Sales Manager Went To Jail
![]() |
First off, this is absolutely a true story. One of the worst, most Cold Calling obsessed, dictator sales managers I've ever had is now spending a minimum of next 25 years in prison. This is what happened: Cold Calling started many years ago when I made the decision to move to a new city. I sent out cvs beforehand, and followed up with the folks who contacted me by faxing over sales reports and commission statements. As I was already a legend salesperson by then, the invitations for job interviews came in, and so I made the trip for some days and was wined and dined big-time by my potential employers. After my visit I settled on an offer, which also included all my moving expenditures paid by the company. I chose them for two factors: Firstly, they were the leading company in their industry. Secondly, and even more importantly, the Director of Sales who I'd met with promised me that since my record spoke for itself, I would not be needed to cold call and would be liberated to do my very own thing with no micromanagement. Starting My Job I showed up for Cold Calling and told to my new sales manager. Unfortunately, either the Director lied or the manager was not on board with the plan, since I was told on no unclear terms that I'd be needed to make at least 50 cold calls daily, take part in activity reports and funnel reviews, be in at 8 am every day and return at 5 pm to review activity, and so on. Business Card Horrors This manager, the dictator, needed 50 calls daily, and whether they were on the phone or in person was on us. On days when we'd canvass, we had to get back 50 new business cards at 5 pm, and the dictator would use a little rubber stamp to stamp each one, insuring that no one would utilize the very same card two times. The Infamous Phone Logs On all other days, I'd come in at 8 am as needed (a complete waste of time since the office was frequently out of the way of other appointments, and I could never schedule an 8 am appointment). Usually I'd locate a printout of my extension's activity from the company telephone system, showing how many telephone calls went out from my telephone. The dictator would never say anything - he was too cowardly for that - he just quietly left the call reports on our tables. At last - I Left! Finally, the day came when I'd had enough. I planned a conference with the Director (the dictator didn't command enough respect from me to meet with him) and I informed him of my decision. When I asked the reason, I told him on no uncertain terms that his promise to me was broken, and I also detailed the horrific micro-management and abuse I had to take from the dictator, that made a situation where I was unable to do my job effectively. The Dictator Gets Terminated Evidently the Director was first unacquainted with any of this, because my quitting and explaining my explanations why caused the little dictator to get dismissed. They got rid of him as soon as they found that he'd a superstar sales representative like me and made me leave, after the company had paid my shifting expenses and everything.
